Steven Ascher is one of the most remarkable American director, producer, writer who has once been nominated for an Academy Award and also has received the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The book “The Filmmaker’s Handbook – A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age” written by him summarises the process of filmmaking. It mainly concentrates on the positioning of cameras, lighting, the part of sound in films, and the production works. This book mainly acts an as perfect beginner’s guide in filmmaking. The author first describes the reflection of digital technology in movies. He gives an introduction about how movie has created a great impact in people lives and changed their perception of seeing the reality of life which reflects on the movie that is created.
Actually, “movie” isn’t the right term to describe all types of productions; no single word is.
You could call them “motion pictures,” (Ascher, 2013)
Filmmaking process consists of three main steps:
1) Pre- Production: The development of script, story boarding, choosing the actors
2) Production: Finalising the dates and the shooting process
3) Post Production: The final filmmaking process and the execution of final master copy.
“Medium is the message” (Ascher, 2013)
The medium of the movie serves the large part in connecting the movie’s content and the audience’s feel to the movie. This book relies mostly on the proper positioning of cameras, in which way the lighting has to be kept so that the movie reveals more beautifully. The book speaks more about the practical works to be done while the process. At one point, styles and used in filmmaking becomes cliché. At that time, that’s where the creative work of positioning of cameras or else the proper lighting rescues the concept. The more the contrast, colour, sharpness and focus are handled, the better the movie communicates with audience well. Sound plays a great role in movie making, which it always brings out the emotions of the message to be conveyed through the film.
Finally, if one wants to know what film making really is in technical aspects, this book is a great intro to it.
